The Burden Ledger · Gross National Trauma Index

What does a nation carry?

The Gross National Trauma Index is a first-of-its-kind proposed global composite index for measuring accumulated national trauma burden.

GNTI is designed to help nations, institutions, researchers, and funders understand the psychological weight carried by populations across time — from war, displacement, disaster, structural adversity, violence, family rupture, cultural loss, and intergenerational wounds.

Conceived by Dr. Aimon Kopera and developed by MINDAI Institute for academic validation and global partnership, GNTI aims to make trauma burden visible enough to study, compare, govern, and resource — without reducing human suffering to a simplistic score.

Measure the burden. Reveal the pattern. Resource the repair.

The Lineage

Every great index changed what the world could govern.

GNTI stands in a lineage of global measurement systems that changed public imagination.

1934

GDP made economies visible.

1972

GNH made wellbeing governable.

1990

HDI moved development beyond income.

2001

WHO Mental Health Atlas mapped mental-health systems.

2007

GPI made peace comparable.

2010

MPI showed multidimensional deprivation can be rigorously aggregated.

2026

GNTI now proposes to make national trauma burden visible.

The White Space

No existing measure sees the full wound.

Happiness ≠ healing

Happiness is a vital sign of wellbeing; healing is the deeper process of resolving what still hurts.

Peace ≠ repair

Peace ends visible conflict; repair restores the trust, safety, and relationships damaged by it.

Health systems ≠ healing capacity

A health system provides formal care; healing capacity includes the wider ecology that helps a society recover, reconnect, and transform.

What GNTI Measures

The dimensions of national trauma burden.

GNTI is designed as a multidimensional, population-level measure of accumulated psychological and social trauma burden.

Conflict & displacement legacy

War exposure, refugee flows, occupation history, and the generational footprint of violence.

Disaster & environmental shock

Natural catastrophe, climate displacement, and pandemic-scale collective stress events.

Structural adversity & inequity

Chronic deprivation, discrimination, and the slow-burn burdens that statistics rarely unify.

Intergenerational transmission

Indicators of how unmetabolized history passes from one generation to the next.

Population distress signals

Existing global datasets — never before unified — composited through a trauma lens.
